In the present day, a heart attack—brought on by an excess of plaque, the shocking infidelity of his wife, and conducting an opera that paralleled his life—lands classical pianist Stefan Radowitz in the hospital after sudden open heart surgery that narrowly saves his life.

Never feeling lower, Stephen wanders to Mozart’s gravesite after he’s released from the hospital to seek solace and unwittingly opens a portal to another time.

As his old life continues to fade in the back of his mind, Stephen meets Countess Elisabetta Grünewald and becomes consumed with her. The two begin a passionate affair and plan for a future, but Stefan knows his time with Mozart is fleeting.

About the Author

Michael Pratt is a Professor of the Practice of Music at Princeton University. He has conducted the Princeton University Orchestra and Opera Theater for over four decades and has given symphony and opera performances around the world, performing repertory from five centuries. He is the recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton and is an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Music (HonRCM), London. While he has written extensively about the music he has conducted, The Copyists is his debut novel and is the culmination of numerous lifelong passions.
