This fire season has burnt an estimated 18.6 million hectares (46 million acres, 186,0000 km, 72,000 miles), destroyed over 5,900 buildings (including over 2000 homes) and killed at least 34 people. An estimated one billion animals have been killed and some endangered species may be driven to extinction.

The Australian RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) are working alongside government and emergency agencies, veterinarians and local authorities to provide much needed equipment and supplies, emergency care and identifying and assessing injured animals in need of assistance. Their work will continue for months after the fires have ceased.
