McFarlane Toys Walmart Exclusive Gold Label Mandarin Spawn Figure Review

So let’s have a chat about some McFarlane Gold Label. More specifically, let’s talk about the new Wal Mart exclusive Mandarin Spawn figure that is out now…So this version of Spawn is not one I collected until now. This was an impulse buy, so initial thoughts are very positive. I know Mandarin Spawn has had better paint and sculpt from earlier lines, but for me, I am still impressed with this figure.

Starting out with the head, a lot of tlc from the McFarlane team went into this thing. No matter what angle you are looking at, its eye catching from the sculpt, to the paint. This may be one of the best head portraits McFarlane has ever done. Moving onto the body, that same passion continues. I shouldn’t be surprised as Spawn is Todds baby, but the design choice on this thing is really stunning. The front body plate has a great sculpt, with a tremendous paint job. The body feels like a Where’s Waldo book, as it has so much going on. From the front, to the shoulder pads, to the back, and even the arms. All of it is eye candy that keeps you coming back for more. This thing is really worthy of that gold label tag. As for the lower body, its just as intricate as the upper body. The stash has a great design with sculpted details. Its a bit stiff, but more on that in articulation. The legs have a unique design. The back is more or less plain, but the front is intense. The masks on both knees really stand out and make the figure even more amazing, and the unique foot design create a wtf moment in your head. I am really impressed with this figure on multiple levels.

As far as articulation goes, starting with the head, it is limited. It really can’t look up or down. A little tilt and side to side is about it. As for the shoulders and arms, they work better. The use of ball hinges at the elbows and hands work really well, and aren’t too ugly. As for the upper body, it has the right moves. It can crunch a good amount at the front and back. It can move side to side with no real issue, and can tilt side to side and rotate. The lower body is a mix bag. The legs are on ball joints, but are a bit limited. The sash is a harder plastic, and gets in the way quite a bit. The knees are double jointed and inverted to a degree which gets strange, and the feet are on a weird style hinge that doesn’t work out well and feels like its going to break.

As for accessories, he comes with the giant staff, dragon sword, and black stand. The dragon sword looks really good. I love the detail on the blade. It does weigh down on the figures hand though, for those curious. The long staff that is the exclusive weapon came out equally as good. The spawn logo is a nice touch, and its pretty freaking huge. And of course, we get the standard black base, but with Spawn printed on it. Overall, I love this figure. I don’t have the history that many reading or watching the review have with this version of Spawn. For an impulse buy, I feel my money was well spent.
