Today in the Toyverse, I travel back to my horror roots and examine a really amazing piece from Retro-A-Go-Go! The piece I am talking about is the EC Comics “Tales from the Crypt” Masterpiece Ornament Set. This box set features the Old Witch from The Haunt of Fear, the Vault-Keeper from The Vault of Fear, and The Cryptkeeper from Tales from the Crypt. This three piece set captures these 50s icons in a tremendous way. Not only do they work at a display piece, but include ribbion and a detachable magnet base to hang on your Christmas tree.
The Vault-Keeper
The Vault-Keeper has an interesting design. But first let m e say the sculpting and paint is awesome. The Vault-Keeper pops in hand, and the fact that the Vault-Keeper has a 4th Wall approach that is fun. This of course is why I said interesting because the Vault Keeper is holding a paint rush and page from the the Vault of Horror. However this 4th wall approach is one of the things that make the EC Horror hosts so loved. Overall its a fun addition to the team.
The Old Witch
When it comes to the Old Witch she really stands out the most from the three. She is my favorite of the bunch. Not only is she holding a copy of Haunt of Fear, but the detail really stands out. From the creature on her shoulder, to the details on the book, she really catches your eye. The paint and sculpt make you almost see the cackle from the books. Overall, a fun addition to help complete the team.
The Cryptkeeper
And now for the final member of the team. The host that boasts the most, the Cryptkeeper. This one has to be the most creepy looking of the three. I look the paint and sculpt, but I love the use of the lantern and the host clutching the book. It just gives off a vibe of fear. With the Cryptkeeper you feel like you are going on a journey, and thats what makes this final piece the leader of the pack.
