Shero Comics Launches New Doll to Accompany Groundbreaking Manga Series “Young Grandmaster Choi”

Black and Female Led Comic Book Company Follows in the Footsteps of the First Black Female Cartoonist Jackie Ormes with release of Comic Book Inspired Doll

Shero Comics, a pioneering, award-winning comic book publisher known for celebrating Black women and girls as main protagonists, is excited to announce the launch of a new doll to accompany their latest manga series, “Young Grandmaster Choi.” This innovative release continues Shero Comics’ mission of empowerment and representation, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Jackie Ormes, the first Black female cartoonist.

“Youth Grandmaster Choi” is a martial arts-themed manga that follows the journey of Rayven Johnson, a six-year-old African American army brat who is adopted by a South Korean family after the passing of her parents. At her new school, Rayven faces bullies who torment her for being different. In this second chapter of the critically acclaimed four-part series, shortly after earning her yellow belt in Hapkido & Taekwondo Rayven is targeted by a jealous bully who chastises her for not being Korean. Rayven struggles with her confidence until she learns the little-known fact that Black American soldiers, like her late father, are responsible for what is now known as Korean Fried Chicken.

The new doll brings the character of Rayven to life, allowing fans to connect more deeply with the story and its values of self-confidence, cultural pride, and courage.

“We’re thrilled to introduce this doll as a companion to the second book in our new manga series,” said Shequeta L. Smith, Founder and CEO of Shero Comics. “Following in the footsteps of trailblazers like Jackie Ormes, we aim to provide young readers and fans with characters who reflect their experiences and inspire them to pursue their dreams. This doll is more than just a toy; it’s a symbol of empowerment and representation.”

The collectible new doll is meticulously designed to reflect the unique style and personality of the title character “Rayven Johnson,” from her martial arts attire to her confident stance. It represents a step forward in diversifying the toy industry and provides an opportunity for young girls of all backgrounds to see themselves represented in ways that inspire pride and creativity.

Shero Comics continues to be at the forefront of creating content that amplifies the voices and stories of Black women and girls. By combining the dynamic storytelling of their comics with culturally relevant merchandise, Shero Comics is committed to changing the narrative and challenging stereotypes in both the comic book and toy industries.

The limited-edition “Young Grandmaster Choi” doll is now available for purchase as a part of the recently launched Young Grandmaster Choi II Kickstarter. And will not be sold again after the campaign ends on October 11, 2024.
