51 #1 Review: Mad Cave’s Wild Area 51 Sci-Fi Comedy

Weeeppaaaa… Comic Crusaders… imagine clocking in for work and your job description is basically: “Please wrangle escaped alien tech before the public finds out.” Yeah… welcome to 51 #1, the brand-new sci-fi comedy from Mad Cave Studios that takes the legendary mystery of Area 51 and turns it into the most chaotic workplace in comics.

Created by Curt Pires, drawn by Jok, and lettered by Micah Myers, this debut issue crashes together wild sci-fi action, conspiracy madness, and laugh-out-loud workplace comedy. It’s the kind of comic that reads like Men in Black, The Office, and a conspiracy Reddit thread had a baby and that baby is armed with a ray gun. And friends… it’s a fun ride.

For decades Area 51 has been the holy grail of conspiracy theories. Aliens. UFO crashes. Secret experiments. Government cover-ups. We’ve seen the alien invasion versions. We’ve seen the government-experiment versions.

But 51 asks the real question:

What if the people working there are just trying to survive the weirdest office job on Earth?

Instead of treating Area 51 like a super serious sci-fi thriller, the comic leans hard into the ridiculousness of the situation. The base is full of strange tech, dangerous artifacts, and things that absolutely should not be wandering around unsupervised. Basically… it’s office chaos with extraterrestrials.

Our hero if you can call him that is Harvey, the President’s son and walking definition of “nepo baby gone wrong.” After an epic week of partying in Miami, dear old dad finally snaps and decides the boy needs discipline. So where does he send him?

Area 51!

Solid parenting choice. But the universe clearly has jokes, because almost immediately after Harvey arrives, a militia of conspiracy theorists storms the base and accidentally unleashes a whole mess of alien tech and bizarre creatures. Now Harvey and the employees have to clean up the most classified mess in human history before anyone finds out what’s actually hiding in the desert. No pressure.

Writer Curt Pires clearly understands something important about comics:

Sci-fi can be epic… but it can also be hilarious.

The story works because of the personalities bouncing off each other. You’ve got:

Gord – permanently angry and absolutely not interested in Harvey’s nonsense.
Celeste – the one person who refuses to tolerate the President’s spoiled kid attitude.

Watching Harvey stumble through this bizarre workplace while alien chaos unfolds around him is comedy gold. And just when you’re settling into the humor, Pires hits you with a final-page twist that makes you immediately want issue #2. That’s good comic storytelling right there.

Artist Jok understood the assignment and went big, loud, and wonderfully ridiculous. The pages are packed with:

• crackling ray guns
• giant stomping robots
• flying superheroes
• alien tech everywhere

And one of the funniest visual moments in the book has to be the “Liefeld Particle Cannon.” If you know comics, you’ll laugh immediately. It’s the kind of goofy nod that makes the whole book feel like a love letter to the medium. The characters are expressive, the action pops, and the whole comic moves with great energy.

Letterer Micah Myers deserves a shout-out here because the lettering adds an extra layer of humor to the book. Speech bubbles shift to match emotions storm clouds for anger, hearts for affection, exaggerated punctuation for shock. It’s a clever little touch that gives the dialogue even more personality. Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference. 51 #1 comes out swinging with a killer concept:

What if Area 51 was the worst office job in the universe?

Curt Pires delivers the laughs.
Jok delivers explosive visuals.
Micah Myers sharpens the comedic timing.

The result is a comic that feels fresh, funny, and absolutely packed with personality. If this debut issue is any indication, the team at Mad Cave just launched a series that could become one of the most entertaining sci-fi books on shelves right now. And honestly?

If Area 51 really looks like this… I want the employee handbook.
