CHAPLAIN brings surreal hospital horror, existential dread, and psychological terror to Storm King Comics this July.
Storm King’s CHAPLAIN Unleashes a Mind-Bending Hospital Horror This July
Hospitals are already unsettling enough after midnight. Now imagine one hiding an ancient, unknowable evil that turns every hallway, every prayer, and every flicker of hope into pure nightmare fuel. That’s the chilling setup behind CHAPLAIN, a surreal and deeply unnerving debut graphic novel from co-writers Brad Sun and Rev. Wesley Sun, brought to haunting life by acclaimed artist Raúlo Cáceres, colorist Ryan Winn, and letterer Marshall Dillon. The graphic novel arrives from Storm King Comics on July 7, 2026, with comic shops getting it early on July 1, 2026.
At the rotten heart of CHAPLAIN is an aging hospital chaplain who is already running on exhaustion, doubt, and the crushing weight of mortality. But when he begins to sense a monstrous, ancient presence stalking the hospital corridors, things spiral fast. This is no ordinary evil. This thing infects everything around it with a plague of relentless horror, dragging the chaplain and his bright-eyed young intern into a waking nightmare where sanity frays, faith gets tested, and reality itself starts to come apart at the seams.
That setup alone is enough to get horror fans grinning nervously, but CHAPLAIN also brings serious creative firepower behind the terror. Brad Sun has spent over a decade writing and illustrating comics, including the graphic novels Chinatown and Monkey Fist, both created alongside his brother Wesley under Sun Bros Studios. Beyond comics, Brad also works as a painter and musician, bringing that extra layer of artistic depth to his storytelling.
Then there’s Wesley Sun, whose real-life experience gives CHAPLAIN an especially sharp edge. Wesley has served as a chaplain in hospitals, jails, and homeless shelters for the past 20 years, and now works as a Certified Educator with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, training chaplain interns at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Chicago. That kind of firsthand experience gives this book the kind of emotional and spiritual realism that can make the horror hit even harder. Wesley has also contributed to comic anthologies like the memoir-horror collection Then It Was Dark and the apocalyptic dark-humor series Cthulhu is Hard to Spell—so yeah, this man knows his way around darkness with meaning.
Visually, CHAPLAIN is backed by the unmistakable talent of Raúlo Cáceres, a powerhouse Spanish artist whose horror pedigree is no joke. Having studied Fine Arts in Sevilla and Granada, Cáceres has worked with a long list of acclaimed European publishers and is widely known for terrifying, intense work on titles like Elizabeth Bathory, Morbid Tales, Crossed, Gravel, Crécy, Captain Swing and the Electrical Pirates of Cindery Island, and Extinction Parade with Max Brooks. In other words, this book didn’t just hire an artist. It recruited someone who knows exactly how to make your soul itch.
CHAPLAIN looks like the kind of horror graphic novel that doesn’t just try to scare you—it wants to unsettle your spirit, rattle your faith in what’s real, and leave you staring into the dark a little longer than usual. Between its deeply personal creative roots, terrifying premise, and all-star horror visuals, this one has the makings of a brutal, psychological, must-read descent into madness.
CHAPLAIN hits comic shops on July 1, 2026, and lands in bookstores, online retailers, and through Storm King Comics on July 7, 2026. Horror fans, psychological thriller junkies, and anyone who likes their comics with a side of existential dread should have this one firmly on the radar.
