Francis Portela Debuts All-New Camouflage Variant Covers for G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero

Skybound and Image Comics, in collaboration with leading toy and game company Hasbro, revealed the first batch of all-new “Camouflage Variant” covers from superstar artist Francis Portela (Black Panther) for the smash hit series G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero. From legendary series writer Larry Hama (Marvel’s Wolverine), artist Chris Mooneyham (Nightwing, Sgt. Rock and the Unknown Soldier), and colorist Francesco Segala (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), the iconic series’ issue #311 will arrive in comic book shops on November 20, 2024.

Spanning issues #311-320, Portela’s “Camouflage Variants” each spotlight an iconic G.I. JOE character against a minimalist camouflage background, complimenting their signature looks.

The first wave of covers revealed today span issues #311-#315 and showcase, in order, Snake-Eyes, Duke, Baroness, Stalker and Cobra Commander.

“Francis Portela was born to draw G.I. JOE,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “I can’t wait until all of these are printed and I can line them up on my wall.”

In addition to the new “Camouflage Variant” 1:10 incentive cover series by Portela, G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero continues with main covers by the incomparable Andy Kubert (Marvel’s X-Men) and colorist Tamra Bonvillain and an open-to-order variant cover with a black and white version of Kubert’s main covers.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero is a cornerstone of the historic collaboration between Skybound and Hasbro, alongside the shared Energon Universe that features ongoing series Void Rivals by Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) and artist Lorenzo De Felici (Oblivion Song), TRANSFORMERS by writer Daniel Warren Johnson and artist Jorge Corona (Middlewest), and the upcoming G.I. JOE by writer Joshua Williamson (Superman, Dark Ride) and artist Tom Reilly (The Thing). They are joined by Duke by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Tom Reilly, Cobra Commander by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Andrea Milana (Impact Winter: Rook), Scarlett, from writer Kelly Thompson (Black Widow, Birds of Prey) and artist Marco Ferrari (Frontiersman) and Destro, from writer Dan Watters (Loki, Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!) and artist Andrei Bressan (Dark Ride, Birthright), which round out the lineup of action-packed G.I. JOE miniseries that introduce the iconic characters of the G.I. JOE and Cobra factions to the separate continuity of the Energon Universe.
