Humanoids Announces New Mary Shelley Graphic Novel Biography Celebrating the Creator of Frankenstein
Humanoids is stepping into literary legend territory with Haunted, a brand-new bio-comic centered on Mary Shelley, the visionary young author who wrote Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus at just eighteen years old and changed storytelling forever. The Kickstarter campaign is slated to launch on March 25, 2026, and the project has already earned Kickstarter’s “Project We Love” badge, with Early-Bird pricing, exclusive collector editions, and more lined up for backers.
Following acclaimed releases like The Twilight Man: Rod Serling and the Birth of Television, Lugosi: The Rise and Fall of Hollywood’s Dracula, and All Tomorrow’s Parties: The Velvet Underground Story, Humanoids and writer-artist Koren Shadmi now turn their spotlight toward one of the most important women in literary and pop culture history. And honestly? That feels long overdue.
With Humanoids’ more than 50-year legacy of pushing bold, genre-defining work through Métal Hurlant and beyond, Mary Shelley feels like the perfect subject. She wasn’t just ahead of her time—she practically kicked the door open for modern science fiction and dared the world to keep up. Humanoids describes itself as having been born from the legacy of Métal Hurlant and continuing for over 50 years as a home for boundary-pushing, creator-driven storytelling.
“We—as a publisher, of course, but also as a culture—owe a lot to Mary Shelley for portraying, so eloquently and with such mature insight, the pains of being human and the pitfalls of pretending to be more than. Frankenstein was and is still today a warning against playing God,” says Publisher Fabrice Giger.

Timed for Women’s History Month, Haunted digs into Shelley’s life with a lens that is both intimate and unflinching. The graphic novel explores her upbringing and does not look away from the tragedy that shadowed her marriage to Percy Shelley, including multiple miscarriages and poverty. But at its heart, this book is focused on the creation of her masterpiece—the lightning strike moment when one young woman dreamed up a monster that would echo across literature, film, horror, science fiction, and pop culture for generations.
And this isn’t some dry history lesson dressed up in comics clothing. Haunted leans into the drama, the imagination, and the emotional weight of Shelley’s creative journey, even featuring the monster himself as a recurring character throughout the graphic novel. That’s the kind of choice that takes this from simple biography to something richer, moodier, and way more alive.
The campaign has been years in the making and arrives as a fitting final note to the recent surge of renewed fascination with Frankenstein on screen, fueled in part by buzz around Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride.
KOREN SHADMI is an illustrator and cartoonist; he studied at the School of Visual Arts in NYC where he now teaches. So far, his graphic novels have been translated to a dozen languages. Koren lives and works in Queens, New York, where he quietly awaits the apocalypse.
Born in 1975 from the cosmic spark of Metal Hurlant, Humanoids has never simply followed the curve of publishing—it has bent it. Through every shift of era, medium, and frontier, the spirit has remained the same: restless, visionary, unafraid to evolve. For over 50 years, Humanoids has championed creator-driven content that explores the power of art beyond boundaries and across genres.
If you’re into literary history, horror, science fiction, women creators who changed the game, or graphic novels that swing bigger than the average biography, Haunted looks like one to watch. Mary Shelley didn’t just create Frankenstein—she helped create the future. Now Humanoids is bringing that story back to life in comics form, and yeah, that’s a pretty beautiful kind of monster.
