Lenovations Press Reveals April Fools AI Comic Announcement as Industry Satire
Lenovations Press has revealed that its April 1 announcement of a shift to AI-generated comics was an intentional April Fools event designed to spark conversation about the role of artificial intelligence in independent publishing.
The original announcement, delivered through a video on the company’s YouTube channel, presented the cancellation
of all existing titles in favor of a fictional publishing strategy built entirely around AI-driven creative decisions. The concept included mandates such as splash page-only storytelling, a requirement that 63% of pages feature explosions, and the elimination of long-standing story elements such as Easter eggs and shared universe continuity. The announcement introduced three new titles, including Tube Top Chicks in Trouble, Senior Strike Force, and Bass Masters, all positioned as products of data-driven content development rather than human creativity.
On April 2, Lenovations Press released a follow-up episode of Indie Comics Deep Dive with Mona and Sam, confirming the announcement was staged and reframing it as satire. The reveal highlights a growing tension within the comics industry between algorithm-driven production models and creator-led storytelling.
“The prank was in the tradition of companies having fun with audiences on April Fools Day,” said publisher Len Mihalovich. “But it also created a moment where people paused and asked what they really wanted. If this felt like it could be real, even for a second, that reaction says a lot about where we are right now.”
The fictional initiative was written entirely by Mihalovich without the use of AI tools, intentionally mirroring corporate language and trend-based content strategies. Elements such as “Nitro Jimmies,” explosive ice cream toppings, and rigid storytelling mandates were designed to sit just on the edge of what you would believe.
Lenovations Press confirmed that all existing creator-driven titles, including Section 12, Wild West Adventures of Buffalo Bill, and all other ongoing series, have not been cancelled as the first video indicated.
“The irony is that none of this came from AI,” Mihalovich added.“Itcame from a human creator pushing real trends to their limit. Although AI can generate ideas, it doesn’t understand why something matters the way humans do.”
The April Fools event serves as a reaffirmation of Lenovations Press’ commitment to creator-driven comics and its long- standing philosophy of “Comics Done for Fun.”
