Mad Cave Studios’ Nakama Press Debuts with INDIGO, a Cosmic Tale of Self-Discovery and Destiny

Mad Cave Studios and its new imprint, Nakama Press, are thrilled to announce their inaugural title, INDIGO, the 2023 Hong Kong Comic Support Program Gold Award winner. This science fiction/fantasy is a deeply personal project between talented brothers, author Chi-Ho Kwong (The Architect’s Epiphany) and artist Chi-Kit Kwong, with letters by Charles Pritchett.

Indigo embodies Nakama Press’s mission, merging the rich traditions of manhua with global storytelling through supernatural mysteries that explore universal themes of empathy, sacrifice, and humanity’s role in the cosmos.

Ella is a reporter for an occult magazine, living what appears to be a normal life. She’s not the best at getting along with people, but she has the special ability to sometimes know what other people are thinking. She also possesses an extreme sensibility which enables her to communicate with plants and animals. One day, Ella learns of the strange death of her college professor and beloved mentor, who seems to have committed suicide by starving to death. Instinct draws Ella to investigate the real cause of the professor’s death, which gradually unfolds a series of mysterious incidents which surpass Ella’s wildest imagination. As she investigates further, Ella encounters people who slowly guide her closer to the truth, which causes alternate forces to try and stop her pursuit. With help, Ella overcomes all odds, and in the process discovers she must fulfill her destiny and decide the fate of humanity, Earth…and the universe.

Indigo is a journey of self-discovery and searching for the purpose of life, as humankind has done over the past tens of thousands of years,” said writer Chi-Ho Kwong. “Creating this story with my brother Chi-Kit was an extraordinary experience. While unfolding the life purpose of Ella, I also unfolded mine. Thanks to Nakama Press for making this story known to a broader audience.”

Artist Chi-Kit Kwong added, “To me, Indigo is a classic story of self-discovery and growth. I am absolutely thrilled and grateful to have the chance to collaborate with Nakama Press. To be able to share my work with readers around the world is definitely a significant landmark of my career as a comics artist.”

Nakama Press stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation, fostering a global community of creators and readers as it pushes the boundaries of the medium through cross-cultural narratives, innovative formats, and cutting-edge themes—fostering cross-cultural collaboration.

Indigo, as the debut publication, is a testament to the imprint’s mission of spotlighting diverse storytelling that resonates across cultures. With its heartfelt exploration of human connection and cosmic wonder, Indigo is an unforgettable start to this new chapter of Mad Cave Studios.

Find your place among the stars. Indigo drops on May 20th.
