REVIEW: Medieval Spawn #1
Yo, if you ever thought the Spawn Universe was just about gritty alleys, demons, and bad decisions under neon lights, guess again! Medieval Spawn #1 just pulled up with chainmail, cursed amulets, and enough demon drama to make Hell itself say, “Yo, chill.”
Sir John of York — that’s right, the knight rocking Hellspawn powers like he’s leading a death metal band through 1443 — finally gets his moment to flex. And Image Comics ain’t playing with this one. This issue swings harder than your abuela’s chancleta when you talk back! Written by the homie Rory McConville (who’s already been wreckin’ shop on the main Spawn title), this story kicks off cold — literally.
It’s winter in 1443, it’s ugly out, and Sir John’s squad stumbles across a scared kid named Richard. (Listen, if a kid named Richard shows up crying in a Spawn book… RUN.) Turns out Sir John’s about to catch hands — or claws — thanks to Geoffrey Fitzroy, a straight-up dumb knight who thought it was a good idea to jack a cursed amulet. Congratulations, Geoffrey — you just opened the VIP room for demons and death gods! Now it’s up to Sir John to lay down the medieval smoke… and if you know Spawn, you know it’s about to get messy.
McConville kills the vibe with classic Spawn flavor: dark secrets, cursed souls, and a vibe so heavy you can almost hear a Gregorian chant in the background. Only catch? Sometimes he tips his hand too early. Yo, Rory, we know something bad’s coming, bro — you don’t gotta tell us every five panels! Let us sweat a little!
Marco Itri absolutely cooked this book. Every page feels like it belongs on a heavy metal album cover. Sir John? Dude looks like a walking nightmare — blood-red and black armor gleaming against all that cold, hopeless winter. Straight-up horror knight vibes! When the demons pull up? Bruh. They look like someone skinned a Xenomorph and said, “Now… make it worse.” Terrifying. Beautiful. Chef’s kiss. Ulises Arreola, the Spawn color OG, blesses the book with gloomy skies, blood-soaked snow, and just enough hellish lighting to make you double-check if your smoke detector is working.
Real Talk: Is It Worth It?
Fam… YES. If you’re a Spawn head, a horror fan, or just love watching a knight go full savage mode on nightmare fuel monsters — this book’s got your name written on it.
Legends don’t just live — they BLEED.
