Comixology Originals Gets Weird, Funny, and Deep With Parapsychologist, a Paranormal Family Mystery From Taki Soma and Mark Schey
Just when you thought therapy was complicated enough, Parapsychologist shows up and says, “Hold my haunted clipboard.”
Fresh off the buzz of Alienated, HUGO Award-nominated cartoonist Taki Soma (Sleeping While Standing) teams with co-writer Mark Schey to deliver Parapsychologist, an original graphic novel that mixes comedy, family chaos, emotional truth, and supernatural mystery into one deliciously strange package. With art and colors by Cat Farris (The Ghoul Next Door), letters by Chris Northrop, and edits by Mary E. Brickthrower, this genre-bending digital graphic novel debuts March 31, 2026 from Amazon’s Comixology Originals.
And this one is not just spooky for the sake of spooky. It’s got heart, humor, pain, and personality baked right into the ectoplasm.
At the center of the story is Dr. Ron Richards, a therapist with a legit psychology degree and one very unusual specialty: treating paranormal beings with deeply human problems. We’re talking poltergeists with agoraphobia, werewolves battling toxic masculinity, and ghosts stuck in emotional limbo because they can’t let go of unfinished business. Yeah, this book understood the assignment and then lit a candle in a haunted basement.
But Ron’s not just trying to help monsters process their baggage. He’s also juggling the beautiful disaster known as his own family life. And when a former patient comes back with revenge on the brain and destruction in their sights, Ron and his new receptionist have to step up, get smart, and try to stop everything from falling apart.
So yeah—Parapsychologist isn’t just a funny paranormal comic. It’s a sharp, offbeat story about mental health, personal damage, family strain, and trying to survive the weirdness of life… even when that life includes emotionally unstable ghosts.
Taki Soma brings a very real emotional core to the project, saying:
“I take psychotherapy very seriously, having been a patient on and off for decades,” says Taki Soma. “So, while Parapsychologist is fiction and a comedy, I want to break the taboo a little, to make people feel understood, and less alone in their pain because I’ve been there: trauma, sadness, tragedy, loneliness.” Soma continues, “I hope Parapsychologist gives readers a laugh and maybe a little feeling of recognition along the way.”
That right there is what gives this project extra weight. Under all the paranormal chaos and clever comedy, there’s something grounded and honest happening. It’s not just about things that go bump in the night—it’s about what lingers inside people too.
Mark Schey echoed that emotional truth behind the madness:
“Taki and I wanted to create a story that felt deeply personal yet uniquely entertaining,” says Mark Schey. “When we set out to begin this tale about mental health disguised as a comedic paranormal story, we also happened to enter what would become some of the hardest years of our lives. There’s nothing quite like putting your sense of humor on display during one of the most difficult moments of your life. We were barely holding it together, but we pushed through and found the process therapeutic.” Schey continues, “We are hopeful people will connect with the story and are grateful to everyone who gives it a chance.”
That’s the kind of creative honesty that makes a book like this hit different. Parapsychologist sounds like the kind of comic that can make you laugh, make you think, and maybe even make you feel a little seen while a spectral meltdown is happening three panels over. That’s a win.
And let’s talk about the team for a second, because this lineup is loaded.
Taki Soma has built an impressive body of work across creator-owned and mainstream comics alike, with credits including Alienated, United States of Murder, Inc., Bitch Planet, Dick Tracy, Iron Man, and the autobiographical graphic novel Sleeping While Standing, which was named one of the best graphic novels of 2022 by the American Library Association. Her work has reached readers through publishers including DC, Image, IDW, Marvel, Dark Horse, Jinxworld, Avery Hill, and Comixology Originals.
Mark Schey has made his mark with a focus on ambitious, character-driven speculative fiction, including editing work on Alienated and co-creating the bestselling sci-fi anthology Black Box Chronicles from Magnetic Press. His recent work also includes involvement with the 2025 reboot of Deadline UK.
On the visual side, Cat Farris brings the perfect energy to a book like this. A Portland-based artist with credits across Oni Press, Dark Horse Comics, IDW, and HarperAlley, Farris most recently worked on The Ghoul Next Door and Up to No Ghoul, making her an ideal fit for a story that needs spooky charm, comedic timing, and emotional range all at once.
As for Comixology Originals, the digital line continues to carve out a lane for standout creator-driven projects that blend accessibility with strong storytelling. Parapsychologist will be available digitally at no additional cost for Kindle Unlimited and Comixology Unlimited members, and also available for purchase through Comixology’s storefront.
Bottom line? Parapsychologist looks like it could be one of those sneaky-good releases that pulls readers in with its killer premise, then lands even harder because of the humanity underneath the monsters. Funny, weird, heartfelt, and just twisted enough to stand out, this one has serious potential to become a favorite for readers who like their comics with brains, heart, and a little ghostly side-eye.
If the idea of therapy for paranormal beings already made you smile, this one should absolutely be on your radar.
