REVIEW: Refrigerator Full Of Heads No.2
This week I decided to try “Refrigerator Full Of Heads”, I was not disappointed. A gory experience which brought about callbacks to Steve Dillion’s greatest hits, the premise of the Hill House story features an island where those who are beheaded still are animated and conscious. This leads to some imaginative kills, such as the main protagonist playing basketball with impaled biker gang heads into the welcoming mouth of an impaled shark who lost his top. The fusion of both onomonopeia and the art is enough to make Walt Simonson blush. To see and ax go through a person’s head and for the blood to spell out the sound effect ? Damn, Fowler and Design are quite the creative pair !
An extended arc comprised of a mystery behind not only the mystery of reanimated disemboweled heads but also missing children is filled in with biker gangs getting their heads blown off and a majority of the panels graced by a cover star protagonist who doesn’t have to be drawn completely exposed to show off her beauty. Youers “Refrigerator Full Of Heads” is a fun entry under the Hill House imprint, but far from goofy.
“Refrigerator Full Of Heads” may not win over new readers like myself, but taking a peek doesn’t hurt. Youers and crew have curated an issue that could stand up to rival as entertaining with anything on the shelves come it’s release on new comic book day, and would look nice and make a tough trade out of any collector’s crate. This is the type of unexpected gem that makes digging through the dollar bins a praiseworthy tradition.
Score : 4/5
