REVIEW: Avengers Forever : Doom of Dooms

The real “Multiverse of Madness”, Jason Aaron’s “Avengers Forever” No.5 is further textual evidence that illustrates why Doctor Doom should not only be recognized as Sorcerer Supreme, but why Doom is one of the most interesting characters to ever pop up in comic book lore.

The book features a ton of Doom on Doom violence wherein Doom is able to parallel his story with The Man-Thing, a character who’s mastery of the sciences (surface and mystical) surprisingly never took him to being in contention of Sorcerer Supreme himself. The grounds of duality are covered all throughout this issue as line’s separating love/hate, vanity/self-abasement, down to the size of this issue and the amount of knowledge that is contained within it, all the way up to the threat that Multiversal Masters of Evil are and are seen as nothing but pawns in Doom’s eyes … “Doom of Dooms” screams key issue without saying a word.

Chock-full of dialogue and art by Jim Towe and Guru-Efx that work in unison to show the pain and struggle of the characters that Aaron decided to put on the torture rack for this issue.
As “Avengers Forever” continues to go forward, it’s obvious that Aaron has taken to task to hurting the same characters that were responsible for once hurting his career, since his Avengers run prior to this point was universally panned.

“Avengers Forever” is a spectacle brought of both pain and love, and “Doom of Dooms” exemplifies that as the good Doctor loves himself enough to kill himself. Without death there cannot be reinvention, and Aaron has been able to reinvent Doom and add to the mythos of one of Marvel’s most interesting characters. With the Multiverse being so vast, Victor Von Doom is the perfect character to focus on since he has a willpower that is just as insatiable. Not to say that I want a mini-series out of this, “Doom of Dooms” is perfect as it is : an issue that forwards the narrative of multiple stories, but can still standalone as a solid one-shot. This is the type of comic that can make first-time readers lifetime comic book collectors.
