Review: Bill & Ted Are Doomed #1

Bill & Ted Are Doomed assembles perhaps the perfect comic team for an excellent humor book with Evan Dorkin writing and Roger Langridge on art and lettering. This book works as a perfect companion to the films, acknowledging them and then giving us a unique tale of the middle-aged lives of our heroes.

The characters are incredibly recognizable even while all having their own unique look, expressions and voice. The villain of the first issue is basically writers“ block with Bill and Ted unable to write the song Rufus tells us is fated to unite the world.

In spite of the growing families with princesses and children and growing financial strain, their creative juices aren“t pumping. Even their robot versions are suffering from lethargy. Similarly the troll-like Station Dudes are having no luck with their work and Death can“t score a solo.

The boys and Death go to Cluck E Chick to get dinner only to find out from their wives that they are deep in debt. Bill and Ted resolve to bring the Wyld Stallyns back to prominence and profit. Unfortunately their first concert back goes badly.

The issue ends with a number of plot threads as the robots want girlfriends, the Station Dudes want to head back to space, Bill and Ted decide to go on a world tour and chaos erupts in the far future. Bill and Ted Adventures are never truly about the story, but this one is interesting enough to keep us coming back. Add to that the dialogue and characterizations all fit the stories we know and love.

The art and colors are perfectly suited to the heart and humor we want from these heroes. Every page overflows with personality and joy. Here“s hoping that Dorkin and Langridge can continue the excellent momentum of this first issue and give us a story to unite the world.Â
