Review: Deep Beyond #1(of 12)

In the first issue of Deep Beyond #1, a mysterious undersea laboratory has an accident or is attacked? Then an eco-terrorist group attacks the family member of Executive Branch. At a different undersea location, the become aware that something is wrong, but they are not sure exactly what. At this point it is so ambiguous. It could an attack of the killer squid or a virus, or killer fungi I frankly do not know at this point.

Mirka Andolfo and David Goy have captured the lost art of letting the panels tell the story not just telling. I really do hate the idea of bad science laboratory messing around with something it should not be. But this issue skipped right past that part and got to the good stuff. It has the feel of Underwater (2020), and Cloverfield all at once. You can tell it is only a matter of time before this title gets optioned, for something.

The art was done by Andrea Broccardo (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Empyre: X-Men) coloring by Barbara Nosenzo (The Ballad of Halo Jones). From panel one, there was no mistaking that this was going to an entertaining issue. The usual I hope she makes it! Is later exchanged to an uneasy dread, leaving me unethically dirty, yet sensible at the same time. There are some panels that were a bit confusing because some of the tones seemed to depict motion when the character was just sitting still.
