REVIEW: Dracula: Blood Hunt #1

The Marvel Universe has potentially been turned upside down in Dracula: Blood Hunt #1. Has the Prince of Darkness finally seen the light?

Marvel Comics’ major event is all about an eternal night allowing vampires to ravage the globe. And you can’t have a vampire apocalypse without THE vampire right? Enter Dracula, but with a twist. He isn’t leading the vampire army against mankind, or even happy about what is happening. Dracula wants to…save the world? Shocking isn’t it? And to do so, he’s taking another unexpected step and recruiting the daughter of his sworn enemy in Blade’s kid Brielle. This is an odd couple indeed but they actually fit together here perfectly thanks to some stellar writing by scribe Danny Lore. Brielle is brash yet likeable. And Dracula is cool and calm while also being extremely deadly…and also kinda funny in the darkest of ways.

The story is intriguing and the art is amazing. Dracula’s design is exemplary. The armor he is wearing for this adventure looks both classic and modern and has him looking like a legit action hero. And Brielle, while a newcomer to Marvel’s stable of heroes, is giving off serious Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes visually. Some amazing paneling allows the action to almost leap from the pages (literally during some fight scenes). It’s brutal, it’s visceral, it’s what you would expect from an issue mostly dedicated to vampire hunting. Artists Vincenzo Carratu (art) and David Curiel (colors) put the blood in blood hunt, and make it all look cool to boot.

Placing old characters in new roles can be a tricky proposition. But in Dracula: Blood Hunt #1, Dracula’s switch from antagonist to protagonist goes as smoothly as can be. He’s still the cold, calculating, head vampire in charge make no mistake. Moves are being made without his authorization and there will be hell to pay. Saving the world may just be a byproduct of it all. It will be interesting to see how Dracula and Brielle work together moving forward and what will happen once Blade inevitably pulls up.
