Review: Fangs
Vampire movies and TV shows such as The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, and Twilight were once driving the pulse of horror media during the 2000s and 2010s
Story Thus Far
Fang, However is none of those. In fact it is a is a drab attempt, at adding something new to the Vampire genre. Don’t get me wrong. Fang is not necessarily boring because It tries to be Twilight Nor is it boring because, It is missing the Vampires VS Werewolves dynamic. The thing that disturbs me the most is that over the years vampire writers have done quite well in establishing that vampires operate in a hierarchy, with a clearly defined chain of command. Mostly vampire operate in tribes, broken up regionally with clearly defined hunting sites. In actuality, the narrative structure was dumped in favor of a love story that was devoid of any love.
Vampire movies split largely into two categories: the romantic vampire and the monstrous vampire. Story Thus far: Fang, Lays out the first days of a new Vampire named En. En was turned accidentally after a crazed vampire attack. He has been taken under wing by a Vampire named Ichii that has been tasked to a Vampire investigative taskforce. In order to eat without killing a bunch of innocent people, En the Virgin must pair with a Mentor. The thing is that there are gala and events where Vampire get together to hookup for pairings. The investigator escorts the virgin to the Gala to be his guardian The room is full of desperate vampires, so the two end up leaving together paired anyways.
Art:
The characters are beautifully drawn and fit their personalities perfectly. Underneath it all there is a hint that each has a lot of depth and uniqueness about them. This is another point at which I feel catfished. I starts out quite tasteful, at a gala but then eventually descends into nothing but lecherous animalism leaving behind its plot point of pairing and Vampirism. I get the Idea that it is supposed to be fan service art that only exists to please or titillate the fans. furthermore the characters are beautifully drawn and fit their personalities perfectly, underneath it all there is hint that each has a lot of depth and uniqueness about them. But for Budha Buddy’s sake, you got to give them characters time to breath.
Script:
The dialogue fails under the weight of the 1st chapter. It t feels like the Vampirism was used as an excuse to not have as story. Instead it should have been something to build on. The story at one point acknowledges that with the line “We arent’ human anymore so technically this isn’t gay”.
I guess the reason I am so disappointed is because from the jump I felt like I was being set up for a narrativ more akin to Vampire Diaries, which focuses on a young woman named Elena trapped in the center of a love triangle between two vampire brothers,
There are some explicit steamy scenes. There is definitely some (En was asking Ichii to wait, slow down Ichii didn’t then En liked it).
This was also a somewhat interesting take on vampire society, what with the Fangs organization, blood delivery, pairing with other vampires being encouraged, support groups but in the long run it definetely reminds me of TokyoGhoul in that aspect.
Speculation:
A platform like HBOMAX would be lacking if they didn’t take a look at adapting something like Fangs. Wednesday warrior are going to need something in comic book form, because but at 244 pages Fangs won’t be very collectible.
