Review: Future State: Robin Eternal #1
Robin Eternal is such old school fun that it makes you want to whoop out loud. Jumping to the future might have been the only way we could get a genuine Tim Drake comic with fantastic writing, perfect characterization and amazing art.
Writer Meghan Fitzmartin clearly just understands Tim Drake. Add to that the always astounding artistic feats of Eddy Barrows and some of the best inks in a modern comic by Ebar Ferreira. All the other Future State comics can revert back as planned, but we need this comic to tell Tim Drake stories eternally.
Tim Drake uses a camouflage mode to attack a Magistrate convoy carrying a Lazarus Pit powered formula that can empower Cybers. He takes down a giant Cyber with surprise help from Stephanie Brown as Spoiler. Tim as usual says all the wrong things before telling her of his mission.
Stephanie refuses to help saying she can’t watch those she loves die. Tim searches for help from hearing impaired customs officer Darcy (from the We Are Robin crew). They discuss the Lazarus Resin which can superpower Cybers and has unknown effects on humans before rocketing upto the Helicarrier-like convoy transporting the Resin.
There we are pleasantly greeted by the return of Spoiler before they are all greeted by a large contingent of guards and Cybers. The issue ends as Tim is thrown into the Lararus Resin but rises prepared for battle.
This comic is packed with action, characters we love, grand battles and insanely perfect art. The colors by Adriano Lucas are a perfect cap to an incredible artistic team. This is a team that could do great things with any characters, but it’s just such a treat to see them running free with a character we love as much as Tim Drake as Robin.
Here’s hoping Infinite Frontier means that fans can demand more of these classic Tim Drake stories in the far future. But at least we get this issue which uses a future time to restore a classic character to his deserved greatness.
