Review: Future State Robin Eternal #2
With Future State Robin Eternal #2 writer Meghan Fitzmartin does a fantastic job of continuing to focus on Tim Drake and his ongoing issues with the Lazarus Resin. The largest question of this issue is the level of insanity or strength the Resin might bring. The book does a wonderful job of focusing on Tim as a character and the art cannot be overstated in its greatness.
Unfortunately the Lazarus Resin twist does take away from the focus on Tim and his relationships. Tim, Darcy and Stephanie are working together well throughout the book, but there is not quite the same focus on Spoiler which is unfortunate given the clear pathos of the trauma of seeing Tim dying repeatedly.
That being said we do see Tim‘s voice shine through and this is the Tim Drake that we know and love. There are plenty of callouts to prior Tim Drake stories including his introduction in A Lonely Place of Dying as well as his initial battle against the Scarecrow. The Lazarus resin that covered Tim at the end of the last issue clearly sends him into a state of partial madness. But Tim‘s logical side is able to shine through and eventually dominate.
The battle against the Magistrate’s forces and a Peacemaker is a cacophony of hallucinations, memories and voices until Tim is able to overcome the effects of the Lazarus Resin to defeat Peacemaker-13. Darcy is interesting as a character who is hearing impaired but is able to use that to her advantage through technology and strategy.
The art by Eddie Barrows is absolutely amazing. The inks by Ebar Ferreira and colors by Adriano Lucas push it to the stratosphere. Every panel screams classic robin and is astounding in the emotion, color, technique and the sheer power of the piece. It is true art at its greatest.
We need a Tim Drake book with this level of art and storytelling on a consistent basis. Fitzmartin and Barrows so clearly love Tim Drake and that fondness shines through in the level of their craft. Although the Lazarus Resin is a crutch that was not needed it does establish Tim as a very powerful character going forward in the Future State universe especially as he rises back from sure death once again at the end of the issue. This comic shows the power that a good Tim Drake story has and the potential within the character for an ongoing comic.
