Review: Hulk #8
We need massive posters of every single page of this book. Daniel Warren Johnson’s Hulk vs Thor work in Hulk #8 is just that impressive. Any book created both Donny Cates and Daniel Warren Johnson is expected to have wall to wall action, incredible art, massive destruction and great character moments and Hulk #8 delivers on all expectations. Martin Coccolo is a revelation on colors in a book that jumps off the pages as comics are meant to do.
As comics try more and more to ape films, Daniel Warren Johnson continues to show that when it comes to visceral action nothing beats the comics page. Cates and Johnson channel classic Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness story-telling telling here with a knock out fight between a Odin/Mjolnir powered Hulk and a Gamma ray powered Thor.
The action and fun just burst from every panel as the team reminds us that Hulk with Mjolnir is not the foregone victor. Beta Ray states Thor has been holding back in prior encounters and now has Hulk-level ferocity driving his strength. None of it truly needs to make sense but the creators keep things simple and clear and allow the action to dominate.
Thor pulls the world tree from the ground and endangers everything with his rage until Banner and Odin work together and calm Thor enough to create an opening. They then use Mjolnir and Odin’s power to knock the gamma back out of Thor. This also knocks Hulk back to his own form allowing him to escape.
Thor believes Hulk is innocent of earthly accusations so he lies to Iron Man and claims Hulk is dead. As perfect as Ryan Ottley has been for the Hulk book, having Daniel Warren Johnson on a Hulk vs Thor book is also just such a perfect, decadent treat. This is what comics is all about, big action, massive stakes, fun battles and interesting characters. The scope of the art spares no corner of any page.
