Review: Jenny Zero #1
Jenny Zero #1, written by Dave Dwonch & Brockton Mckinney takes on the ‘Kaiju genre trend.
Story Thus Far:
Jenny Zero #1, observes Jenny Tetsuo, an agent of the Action Science Police (A.S.P). The ASP is a department whose mission is to be the first line of defense against Kaiju, and to develop weaponry. Jenny it would be sufficient to say is not a model citizen. Slogging her way through life, YOLO is her mantra after a so far non defined traumatic event. But now the ASP needs her to get back into fighting Kaiju, by resupplying her with a bio-attached Fish Gun called Nemo. Nd that is not the only thing.
Dialogue:
The word of the day is familial projection. The most entertaining dialogue is between Jenny and her best friend which has a child to mother quality. There are moments when she has dialogue with her supervisor which feels like she is projecting any anger she may had of her father on to him. Unfortunately, from a reader standpoint it makes her less likeable without the full context of her trauma.
Art:
The art was done by Magenta King, and the coloring by Megan Huang. Kaiju comic panels are always tough, but here the art team was technically sound, with the splash pages. Balancing in between depth of field and bright palette colors to capture life and demonstrate tone. As for the character design of Jenny, there was nothing to spectacular until she puts on the Nemo. I could totally see some Jenny Zero inspired cosplay, and sleeve tattoos. The monster designs did not really break ground, but I have a feeling that was because they were suppose take a backseat to the big reveal.
Jenny Zero’s unabashed approach to life makes her a girl after my own heart, she just needs to dial it back a little. Debauchery is not really a personality trait, but her willingness to save human life is.
All we need now is the” how this more detail on the traumatic event which will hopefully give context to her fall from grace. I cannot wait to see how that traumatic event drives Jenny to use her newly found capabilities.
Note to Comic Speculators:
Wait and see. It is an entertaining good read, but there are several considerations. Dark Horse comics does have several, movies under its belt, and some projects on the way, but nothing that on the scale that would be needed to accomplish a project this big. Still, it would not hurt to pick up and hold onto the cover B for the right price.
Jenny Zero #1 will have 2 covers: Cover A Magenta King; Cover B also by Magenta King which is a 1:10 retailer incentive variant.
