REVIEW: Justice League Incarnate : The Worlds Outside Your Window
The return of characters once lost to DC past, a quantum threat, Captain Carrot ? Must be another book focused on the Multiverse, and Williamson (with an assist from Culver) continues to carry where he left off on Infinite Frontier by setting off another limited series that is sure to have readers begging for more.
Whereas Williamson set up Infinite Frontier Secret Files like a mystery novel, just to have Infinite Frontier run like a blockbuster film, Justice League Incarnate has the elements of classic comic book storytelling beginning with an Avengers arch-type group (The Retaliators) not seen since Morrison’s classic Multiversity. That leads directly into a quick Batman and Superman team up, an exposition where readers are introduced to a new Justice League and eventually a Darkseid battle that would make even those who grew up with the Super Friends smile.
Gene-Luen Yang’s Flash from the New Super-Man series makes a pivotal appearance (making any staunch follower of this imprint wonder why she was not the focus on Future State Flash) and Williamson shows off that applause doesn’t just need to be held for returning characters as Doctor Multiverse with her canon correct “Multi-vision power” is introduced as the key quantum character in the vein of Wave Rider or the Monitor, just this time with sex appeal! Then there’s the comedic aspect : Darkseid looking for crack, Captain Carrot commenting on Justice Incarnate’s name change … the way this is written is absolute gold, punctuated a big Darkseid battle as the opening salvo, clue’s readers in that there is more to be excited about, since what occurred in this issue tends to be a plot device usually used for a DC-event finish.
Peterson, Bressan, and Dinnick all have seamless art, the styles distinct, but not jarring to draw attention away from Williamson and Culver’s story. So refreshing to read a story that stands great on it’s on two before it hits omnibus slot where it belongs in the pantheon of essential DC history.
Score : 5/5
