Review: Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter: Foul Blood #1

The Vampire story business is a tough racket. Either you have to have a compelling Vampire, such as Dracula, or Barnabas Collins, or a interesting Vampire hunter ala Buffy, Blade or Van Helsing.Â You might even get away with having neither if your vampire universe bends the rules of know vampire mythology, which is why Kevin Given’s Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter is kinda ambitious.

Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter #1, starts off from the perspective of homicide detective as they have to grapple with a case involving a gruesomely manipulated corpse.Â The method of the abuse of the corpse is inline with a serial killer who had operated in the area, but he has been locked up on death row.

Most of the issue is an delves into Detectives Karl Vincent and Lyle Chauncey conducting procedural interviews at a Q Friendly club to see what if anyone might know about the murder.Â It does well to display Vincent as a by the book kinda a guy but Chauncey is a bit of a hardheadedÂ homophobic scumbag.Â

Okay lets just say I was a little bewildered at the conclusion of the issue because I forgot it was a flashback , meant to explain how one of the detectives landed in jail. The issue built the reader up and then leaves you hanging in a very weird place. It really was jarring.

The art by Rafael Lanhellas, and colors Arthur Hesli are as good and professionally done as I’ve seen in any other book.Â I will highlight that as a horror book that I was expecting more gore, and the murder scene could have been a little more detailed. Also the covers are a big turn off, and in no way are indicative of how truly good the interiors are.

The bottom line when it comes to Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter #1, is that it has heaps of potential and was very successful at drawing me in. I could have done without 9 pages of the murder investigation, because it didn’t do anything for the story later.
