REVIEW: Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2 (of 2)

The fallen champion of the Gods, Black Adam returns to his worst nightmares in Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2. In his attempt to escape the Nightmare Realm, will Adam help save the world or doom us all?

When we last left Black Adam, he was traversing a tower to be confronted with his greatest fear, powerlessness to protect his loved ones. With the help of mysterious guide (who happens to be in the form of a cat), Adam is put through the worst part of his life…or so he thought. In this issue he has two more nightmare towers to tackle and things go from bad to worse. No spoilers on exactly what he experiences in the towers but it is heartbreaking. It’s here writer Jeremy Haun gets in his bag. A nightmare doesn’t have to be horrific or even scary, it can be sad or just really uncomfortable. This issue covers it all. Exposing his insecurities and him being vulnerable in one panel. Then following that up with brutal tortious imagery the next. It’s really well paced.

Following the lead from the first issue, the art here again is pretty interesting. The overall color pallet is dark, filled with purple and blue hues to once again reinforce the nightmare vibes. Black Adam also retains his golden-age inspired look design that is mixed with modern coloring techniques. Jeremy Haun and Nick Filardi did their thing in their artistic collaboration in this series. The Egyptian inspired/nightmare fueled creatures are also well done. The “final boss” reveal is a real standout scoring high marks for creative design and straight up creepiness.

Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2 is one of the most consequential solo issues in the series so far. It’s a complicated story about one of the more complicated character in the DC mythos. Power is what he craves and also fears losing the most. He wants to dominate but also protect. He struggles to find balance and control his emotions. And in this issue, his true Achilles’ heel, his rage, threatens to make his nightmare real. The ending leaves things up in the air leading directly into the next entry in the main Knight Terrors arc. W This issue has game-changing potential, an emotionally intriguing story, and razor-sharp art. Overall, this is a highly recommended read for followers of the series.
