REVIEW: Knight Terrors: Ravager #1

As DC’s Knight Terror event continues, Ravager is next to have her nightmares explored in Knight Terrors: Ravager #1. The sometimes hero, sometimes anti-hero‘s dream world is different from others and a mystery begins to uncover what part she is to play in the larger story. Hint: It’s probably a big one.

Ravager’s past is pretty dark, daughter of a hitman, growing up in a brothel, etc. But in this nightmare, Ravager comes face-to-face with…herself. A younger version to be exact. The young Rose is on the run from a demonic looking Deathstroke and his equally ghoulish looking henchmen. But something’s amiss about the young Rose and the world the two of them find themselves in. They are forced to go on the run while Ravager tries to figure out exactly what is going on before they’re both sliced and diced. The opening scene stands out for giving off some serious classic horror movie vibes. Writer Ed Brisson basically creates a traditional horror flick and puts it on paper instead of the screen. Running, hiding, monsters and blood, it’s all here. It’s an impressive piece of writing that doesn’t skimp on the action either.

The art is absolutely fantastic. The creatures are terrifying but cool. And Deathstroke (aka Murder Man in this nightmare world) is completely unrecognizable. Take away Ravager’s traditional costume and this comic looks like a cutting-edge indie horror project. There is a background color theme for every scene which helps the characters stand out even more while adding a since of danger, fear, or dread, depending on the situation. The art walks the line between gore and action keeping the reader’s eyes glued to each panel. The work done here by Dexter Soy and Veronica Candini is top notch.

DC giving Ravager her own arc in their major summer event over some of the company’s heavy hitters may seem an odd choice at first glance. But is clear from this issue that Rose Wilson will play a major role in how the event as a whole unfolds. Until then, what additional horrors await Ravager? And mixed in with that horror, there are a couple of twist and turns in this issue to keep readers intrigued and wanting to see what happens next. Knight Terrors: Ravager #1 is a low-key must read for fans following the larger storyline.
