REVIEW: Knight Terrors: Robin #2
In Knight Terrors: Robin #2, both Robin and Red Hood remain stuck in one of the worst nightmares in the Knight terrors saga. Can the two vastly different versions of the same character put those differences to the side and escape the nightmare they both find themselves in?
Jason Todd and Tim Drake are two of the more mentally fragile characters in the DC Universe, they’ve both been through and see some brutal things. So, it’s no surprise that their nightmares, revealed in issue #1, would be two of the harshest. This issue pics up right where the first left off. Robin is being terrorized by the death of his father over and over while Red Hood is being overwhelmed by Red Hooded Jokers looking to recreate Jason’s death. Insomnia is going out of his way to break them mentally…and it works. Both give up on themselves. It’s intense, it’s heart wrenching, and it’s great writing by Kenny Porter. Fans of both characters will get to see them at their most open, honest, and vulnerable.
Keeping in line with the first issue visually, the nightmares retain their brutal imagery and some twisted character designs. Conveying not only the characters nightmares, but the depths of their despair, the art team created some defining visual moments for the two heroes. Nightmare Robin puppeting Tim’s father is a standout panel. And it’s not all psychological manipulation, the Robins get their action on too with some of the coolest art in the issue dedicated to Red Hood taking out an enemy who’s Hood breaks in a way that looks cool and is probably cathartic for Jason. Miguel Mendonca (art) and Adriano Lucas (colors) have done a service to the characters while creating a comic that nails the themes the Knight Terrors series is aiming for.
To become a Robin is to either experience or invite darkness. That is explored here alongside the differences and similarities between these two versions of the sidekick. Their fears boil down to one not caring enough and the other caring too much. And they have to come to this realization to survive. A realization they need to hear from the other. It’s a bit on the nose sure, but again, characters in the Batman universe are a particular brand of tortured souls and hearing them talk themselves up instead of down is good to see every once and a while. Knight Terrors: Robin #2 looks to start a new chapter for the Bat Family, at least for Jason and Tim. It will be interesting to see what happens…after they duo helps save the world from Insomnia.
