REVIEW: Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman #1

Wonder Woman has to battle her way out of her worst nightmare in Knight Terrors: Winder Woman #1. But she’s not alone as the Detective Chimp and Constantine join in on the nightmarish action.

The issue kicks off right after the events of Knight Terrors: First Blood where Wonder Woman and Detective Chimp where hit my Insomnia’s nightmare wave and put to sleep. They both “awake” and are joined by Constantine and immediately start a search for the Justice League Dark team. Their plan is to stick together…but I think you know how that goes. Once separated, the nightmares begin. Constantine’s is a sentimental trip into his personal past with the Justin League Dark. Nightmarish because it’s so heartbreaking. Unsurprisingly, Diana’s is the most emotional and features her battling against her “truth”. No spoilers but it’s a nightmare different from what anyone else has faced in the series so far and might be the most revealing and dangerous one too.

Artistically, this is one of the most creative in the series to date. Multiple page-spanning panels liter the issue conveying the dark dreams of the characters. Constantine is at home fighting Demons and he looks cool as can be while doing it in this issue. Wonder Woman’s strength and grace are both displayed in unique ways throughout. There is an interesting mix of gore and serenity not scene in your average comic book. It truly is a great comic to literally just look at. Kudos to the artist Juan Ferreyra.

The issue also contains the additional story Nubia and the Well of Horrors part 1 by Stephanie Williams. Queen Nubia finds herself trapped in the well of souls with a mysterious guide. Demons are slayed and a nightmarish final boss appears. Nubia takes no mess, even inside a nightmare but will it cost her dearly this time? She also looks cool and as strong and determined as ever thanks to Meghan Hetrick and Marissa Louise. Special shoutout to the art team for making Nubia’s hair look amazing. It’s a quick fun romp through a nightmare version of Themyscira that sets up an epic showdown for part 2.

With good writing and art, Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman #1 is another great edition to the Knight Terrors event. Constantine is the breakout star of this issue and gets a lot of face time. Nearly equal to Wonder Woman actually. But interestingly enough, he wasn’t with Diana and Bobo when they were hit by the nightmare wave so where did Constantine even come from? But there is hardy time to process that with the shocking ending to the issue. The way writer Josie Campbell mixes the heavy topics with some genuinely funny moments makes this issue a lot of fun to read.
