Review: Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #1 (OF 6)

Story Thus Far:

After a day of whoring himself out for social media attention, Mister Miracle’s (Shilo Norman), agent reports that his key demographic is turning negative. So, the plan is to conduct anti-crime operations in place that Super-man doesn’t usually get to. During an arson intercept Shilo meets Denise Dorian of the Metropolis Fire Department and decided to setup a date. Also, it turns out that the arrival of a new character maybe the reason behind the negative sentiment.

Script:

The action was more of an aside to the heavy dialogue and exposition. The pacing was great. The script did well to demonstrate Shilo’s priorities, then quickly pulls them part. I’m not really into the humanizing of Mister Miracle, but if you must this issue did some good things.

Dialogue:

Personally, when I think of the New Gods, I expect them to think above ground spiritual level. Shilo seems to live his character in human trappings. It is not bad or good it’s just a big gamble that I hope to see payoff.

Art:

Better than the average! There have been some issues with the basic designs of African American characters. Shilo; however, looks like somebody’s Uncle Leo that showed up drunk and late to the barbecue to grab a plate. He knows how to play spades. I approve.

Note to Comic Speculators:

This issue is the 1^st appearance of N’vir who claims to be the only son of Scott Free and Big Bard, but they did have a son named Jacob Free (Mister Miracle Vol 4 #7 May 2018). I cannot help but wonder if it is somehow the same kid. Other First appearances include Denise Dorian a potential love interest (though it is not looking good so far). Also, Vito Shilo’s agent. For my money I’ll settle for a raw lower grade Mister Miracle #1 (April 1971). Also do not forget that N’vir will have his 1^st cover appearance on issue #2 cover A. Furthermore, 1^st appearances of Shilo (New Gods #3 1971) can be had for cheap.
