Review: Ninja Nuns #1

A Catholic Covent takes on the well-known sub- deities, intent on spreading terror. Ninja Nun #1 explores stories about the occult, and the Lovecraft Mythos through the antic of a Catholic Convent orders, whose mission is battle demons casted by spells. (Think Ghostbuster…but with Nuns) in a hilariously Lovecraftian comedy.

Cuffe and Frantz, and Chas delivered four concise yet hilarious stories:

Nun the Wiser: Sister Angelica Carlotta Theresa (Sister A.C.T) Takes on Toni, the Cosmic God of Constipation, who was summoned accidentally by a novice summoner.

Far Out: The Ninja Nuns have been sent on a mission to confiscate a class 5 deity and end up encountering the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Rise of the Discomancer: Sister ACT, Christian, and Elsie, take on a zombie horde, led by a necromancer that has summoned one of the figures of the Catholic Faith.

Con Crud: The Ninja Nuns get the experience of going to a Comic-Con and are mistaken for Cosplayers.

One of the defining elements of the issue are the abilities of the nuns to recall Bible verses, in place of a one liner. And it actually works! The fact that that the characters have not fallen into the trope of examining the paranormal with the scientific method and combat it with good ol’ knuckles and prayer is plus for me. I really hope that in the future we see more issues and maybe big screen development rather than the tripe we have gotten so far regarding other similar stories where the characters must combat the supernatural with magic or more arbitrary urban legends

You know where I am going with this.  Ninja Nuns #1 is Warrior Nun’s, Prettier, funnier, and more educated sister.

SCORE: 5/5

Dubbed by Cuffe and Frantz, the creators as the Roman Catholic Church’s “swift arm of justice,” Ninja Nuns in actuality debuted in the pages of the first Metalshark Bro volume as a foil.
