REVIEW: Nubia And The Amazons No.2

Williams’ lengthy writing style for “Nubia And The Amazons” continues in the second issue for “Pride Of A Lion”. Lengthy, but far from crammed as Nubia ends up getting a talisman from a pantheon of deities and the spirit of Medusa is roaming around Themyscira looking to get as close to Nubia as possible by possessing those in the Queen’s inner circle. I understand that Nubia is the Queen of the Amazons now, but for some reason she does not feel like royalty in her own book. The Amazons do not even seem to hold the same respect for her as they would with Hippolyta or Diana, instead they constantly make the coy passes at her, and if it’s not an innuendo then she’s mostly spoken to like an equal or rarely idolized like a deity, such as in this panel where this girl starts crying out Nubia’s name after engaging in battle with her. The admiration and respect for her just don’t appear equal.

Williams and Ayala are vets and the character they are writing about are older than the two of them put together, but here by issue two they still have Nubia finding her footing, yet by no means is this a filler issue. The Guardian of The Doorway position gets passed down, Medusa gets built up as the series’ big bad, and there is some Amazon history espoused as a couple of throw-downs get put on panel, something that reader’s like myself who have an affinity for viewing female combat sports will thoroughly enjoy.

With all of that and William’s paragraph style script, there is a lot of book here in a mere twenty something pages (because of the Batgirls preview, which seemed completely unnecessary so I skipped) that will keep reader’s of “Nubia And The Amazon’s” satisfied for the next 30.
