Review: Power Rangers #1
Power Rangers has established the greatest self-contained continuity in modern comics. This issue shows the strength of those concepts and characterizations as the Omega Rangers defy Zordon to breakout the Rangers greatest enemy to help take on a cosmic threat.
Rather than the weak idea of Jason, Trini and Zack leaving the Power Rangers to go to a Peace Conference, the comic continuity has now established that this was all a ruse as they join the android XI to face cosmic threats as the Omega Rangers. They also now have a massive alien pet in Yale and must return to Angel Grove to gather information on a larger threat.
The lives of the current Power Rangers, including Rocky, Adam and Aisha are shown and seem quaint in comparison. While the Power Rangers spend their time in school and at the beach the Omega Rangers have been training in space to face an Empyreal threat. Jason, Trini and Zack reveal to Zordon and the others that this threat wiped out a planet of twelve million people.
Zordon and Alpha know nothing of this threat but the Omega Rangers learn that their earth bound counterparts have their own mysteries, including the new Green Ranger and the captured multiversal villain Drakkon. Drakkon does know of the Empyreals and the Omega Rangers realize they need his help to face the larger threat.
Even while all the Rangers have a great reunion, the Omega Rangers are playing the others and break into the command center to free Drakkon. Drakkon injures Alpha as he escapes with Jason, Trini and Zach to join their space squad. This is a massive betrayal of Zordon and the Power Rangers and shows, for better or for worse, the growth that the Omega Rangers have had.
Ryan Parrott is just a never ending well of great Rangers lore. This story sets up an exciting new direction with the Omega Rangers facing a massive threat with an untrustworthy ally. The dialogue throughout the issue is natural and fits the tone of the show without feeling old school or outdated. The only distracting detail is the repeated mention of the Omega Rangers not bothering to see their parents. Hopefully this is the seed of a future story because otherwise it only serves to make the teens seem callous.
The visuals of the Omega Rangers, their new pet and the villainous Drakkon are incredible. The breakout scene is action packed to the point that a more traditional battle scene isn“t even missed. The larger conflicts between Tommy and Zordon on one side and the Omega Rangers on another is unique and allows for rich character development on all sides. This is a great start to a new arc and seeing the Omega Rangers enter the Final Frontier is massively exciting as endless storytelling possibilities await.Â
