REVIEW: Sasquatch in Love #1
Sasquatch in Love #1 is an amazing debut filled with absolute joy and superb humor. It is at heart about two genuinely kind and intelligent friends. Sasquatch aka Holden is a bright, thoughtful mythical forest creature who loves to swipe library books and anonymously win poetry contests. Felix Bitterman is his recently heart-broken veterinarian friend who tries to cover his tracks.
When Doctor Gunter Vogel dresses up as a female Bigfoot to fool Holden into falling in love and being captured, Sasquatch Holden instead falls in love with Gunter“s jaded assistant Grace Merriwether. Even while Grace tries to track down a ”˜bigfoot“, she is oblivious to the fact that he is in love with her. Holden does all he can to keep Grace in town and even writes her poetry. Unfortunately the poem is written on paper with Felix“s stamp, setting up a potential love-hate triangle.
The magic of this issue lies not within the simple plot as much as the shear joy of the dialogue and humor between friends. Holden and Felix are a true odd couple. They clearly care about each other but absolutely are willing to laugh at each other even while trying to help out. Grace is also an interesting character in her own right as she investigates leads while being embarrassed and frustrated by the seemingly pointless and very low-paying endeavor.
The art by Alexis Vivallo adds to the lighthearted spirit, creating great characters with writer Jason Nutt. While these archetypes feel familiar, there is absolute talent behind the fun. Sasquatch in Love is a well executed story of friendship, secrets and mistaken identity that leads you feeling uplifted and looking for a Sasquatch of your own.
