Review: Spawn #315
Todd McFarlane recently announced new plans to expand the Spawn Universe with top of the line writers taking on the various heroes within the Spawn canon. This issue shows why that can’t come soon enough. McFarlane clearly knows how to plot out great action and choose insanely great artists, but his scripts have become so rushed and simplistic that they feel like issues of Axe Cop but without the whimsy of knowing a child wrote it.
This issue focuses on a titanic battle between Spawn, Medieval Spawn, Overt-Kill and Omega. The art is incredible with all the classic Spawn chains and capes though the other characters even as our classic Spawn has a pared back action-ready look complete with retractable claws.
The book is filled with incredible action and ends with the emergence of an ancient evil. All of this would represent a top tier book if it wasn’t for the clumsy script complete with text boxes describing all of it to us. Instead of characters speaking or any revelations about their thoughts or motivations, every inch of the book is covered with text boxes telling us what is happening on the page. Even when the characters do speak it is unintentionally laughable.
The mismatch between the epic plot and visuals and the horrible script makes this feel like a parody rather than a real comic book. That being said, it is a whole lot of fun still and so epic that you’ll find yourself flipping back through it over and over.
