Review: Star Wars #24
With Star Wars #24 Charles Soule gives us an excellent character study of Leia. Leia has all the determination of her brother but doesn’t need to hold herself to his restraint. This issue features the big face off between her Rebel alliance and Commander Zahra who has been built up as her major foe over the past several years. The rebels are hunting a marooned Zahra down on Panisia.
Leia begins by reminding her troops that their prey is a pure sadist. They track down her coordinates and Starlight Squadron attempts to take first strike only to find she has escaped into a series of caverns. The bat-like creatures in the cave leave excrement that Zahra uses as an explosive killing the rebel troops.
Leia, Kes Dameron and Chewie remain and face off in a battle of wills. They parry with weapons and words until Leia leaves a trapped Zahra at the mercy of a massive cave creature. She reminds Zahra that she helped draw up the plans to destroy the Death Star knowing the thousands of inertial troops who would die in an instance with its destruction.
Luke refuses to kill even when it means possible defeat. Leia is willing to kill and enact justice where she sees no other way to free the galaxy. This book is filled with strong characterization and solid action. The art by Ramon Rosanas and Madabek Musabekov is a bit uneven but the battle in the cave and the characters and creatures look great and there is a true cinematic feel to the action. Colorist Rachelle Rosenberg uses just the right splashes of red and orange against the stark battle.
This issue is an excellent ending to a rivalry which has been built up across multiple series and she’s just how far Leia is willing to go to help the rebellion.
