Review: Star Wars Bounty Hunter #12
Star Wars Bounty Hunters #12 is the best issue of the series thus far. It serves as a great intro for new readers which is vital as we head crashing towards the largest Star Wars crossover event in history. Part of what makes it so good is a pared back approach focusing on our central characters and their perspectives of Han, Boba Fett and Jabba. It also features a clean, sharp art style with clear story-telling well suited to a Star Wars comic.
Valance has been doing good deeds and helping the rebellion when Dengar reveals to him that Boba Fett has captured Han Solo and taken him to Nar Shaddaa. As they race through space we get to slow down a bit and see how they relate even as they are being chased. Zuckuss and 4-Lom as chasing after another target and believe Valance is involved. As the they attack the ship and Valance takes extreme measures to escape them they head into an asteroid field filled with Exogorths.
Dengar is not happy with any of this and attacks Valance to try to reign him in, even as Valance remembers a very different time. We flashback to his encounter with the mysterious Caviness Thorn and his crew who are after a smuggler. They bring Valance into the fold. The mission gets complicated as the Pykes get involved and Caviness kills one of them. Valance then learns of the true target for the mission: his friend Han Solo.
Valance misses the target on purpose to warn Han but in the battle that follows Han discovers Valance’s involvement and blames him for the attack. Han is written perfectly here, both in his banter with Chewie, and his rush to judgement of Valance. In the present Zuckuss and 4-Lom close in, but Dengar is able to trade his knowledge of the location of Han and Fett for their safety. The issue closes with a host of the bounty hunters we know and love heading towards Boba Fett in the hopes of snatching Han Solo for themselves.
