Review: Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #5
This final issue of the War of the Bounty Hunters is the perfect Star Wars comic. It gets every character, conflict and action piece exactly right. The art is exciting with massive space battles and so many great character moments.
Vader is just as obstinate and obsessed as ever as he chases after Luke ignoring the space battle behind them. Luke is smart enough to know his limits but do all he can to protect his friends. Leia, Lando and Chewbacca are a perfect action-comedy force, bickering as they luck onto the Empire’s flagship thanks to Qi’ra’s help.
The Hutt council unknowingly does the Crimson Dawn’s bidding thanks to the Dawn’s control over Bokku and attacks the Empire head on. This is quickly cut off as Vader is called in to dispose of the Hutt council.
This is also the best Boba Fett issue since the Alpha issue kicking off the crossover. Fett is smart enough to find a way back to Han’s Carbonite bounty without battling the Empire. He uses Valance’s desire to help Han before inevitably betraying Valance and leaving him for dead.
Leia and her team come so tragically close to regaining Han before the battle blows a whole in the station and only the insane daring of Boba Fett allows him to regain the bounty and deliver it to Jabba. All of the action culminates with the rise of the Crimson Dawn who have infiltrated every faction of the Star Wars universe and lead into the Crimson Reign to come.
This issue is so much incredible fun that it lifts this entirely crossover. It also makes one wish that some of this action could have been more spread out over the slower middle issues of the crossover. Hopefully we get more of this high action in the next arc rather than a return to the more claustrophobic setting we saw for much of this one. That being said this book holds so much promise for the future of Star Wars comics.
