Review: STAR WARS YODA #1

With their Yoda comic Cavan Scott and Nico Leon give readers all the fun, action and spectacle we would want. The creators somehow take a small tale of Yoda helping a village needing protection and give it stakes through a larger framework and incredible art.

We start out in Dagobah as a basic framework with Yoda speaking to the ghostly voice that appears to be Qui-Gon Jinn. Yoda waxes philosophic on the importance of Jedi virtues and remembers a time at the peak of the Republic when these virtues were called for. He speaks to the Jedi council about helping a village of colorful characters on the Outer Rim planet of Turrak. Bree and Litah are living the simple life in their village when the Crulkon forces attack.

A simple battle is amplified by artwork that bursts out of the page with color and movement. The color work and use of shadows by Leon and color artist Dono Sanchez-Almera adds so much to give perspective and dynamism to every panel. Yoda speaks to the Council and insists on going to help as the Force leads.

Yoda arrives to the village being plundered and burned and fights off the enemy forces while bantering with the villagers. Yoda bonds with the locals and decides to stick around until the job is truly done. This Mini-Series is Star Wars done to perfection. The perfect book to make us thankful for great characters, conflicts and art.
