REVIEW: Storm #3

Marvel’s resident weather goddess, Storm is back in Storm #3. Ms. Munroe is really going through it at the moment. The X-Men team in in turmoil (surprise, surprise). Storm has beef with her friend and protégé Kitty Pride, Wolverine is all up in her love life, her powers are acting weird, she wants to quit the team, and also, a weather controlling monster is trying to kill her.

What a backdrop to kick off issue three in Storm’s new solo arc. In-fighting and members wanting to leave the team is well trodden territory but writer Ann Nocenti does a great job of having Storm expressing how and why she’s reached her breaking point. Storm and Professor X have a chat that throws in some melodramatics but at its heart, is one of the most thought-provoking convos you’ll find in a comic. Fate, love, happiness, responsibility. Being an X-Man isn’t easy. But there’s also fun to be found in the issue as the team does assemble to battle the mysterious weather entity with all the team getting to show their stuff. Logan is as ornery as ever (his jealousy of Storm’s new relationship is almost cute) and Rogue has some great southern-fried one-liners.

The art is true X-Men art. Everyone is instantly recognizable even out of uniform. And then in uniform, they all look as cool as you want them to. Geraldo Borges (artist) and Andrew Dalhouse (colorist) understood the assignment. Storm has the most radical shift in her look with her mohawk and punk-inspired clothing. That change also plays into the storyline which is a cool touch and is well implemented by both the art team and the writer. The art really shines in the climatic fight sequence. Watching the X-Men work in tandem never gets old and never stops looking cool when the artists behind it put as much TLC into as the creatives do here.

Is Storm really going to leave the X-Men? Leave her family? Who or what is the entity and what is its connection to Storm? Has she found true love? So many questions remain. Back-to-back shockers end the issue and make the Storm #3 a great warmup for what’s next for Storm and the entire X-Men family.
