Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #107

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issue 107, writer Sophie Campbell tries to bring back the classic Turtle adventures but forgets to bring the fun. The Turtles have moved to Mutant town and are working to train and care for outcast mutant kids as part of the Splinter Clan. When some of the kids go missing the turtles including Jennika go searching and quickly run into a band of mousers. While the turtles chase after the Mousers, April investigates their most likely source, Baxter Stockman.

The captured mutant kids attempt to escape while Mikey makes every unfunny joke possible while continually repeating that this adventure is just like the good old days. There is a clear effort to emphasize the theme of revisiting the past, although at least in this issue that goes no where. The past was never this boring, as the only conflict is against Mousers and a very grabby sewer creature who quickly takes down most of the turtles while Baxter watches while sitting at his desk.

The artwork by Nelson Daniel and colors by Ronda Pattinson throughout the issue are well executed, with good use of shadows and absolutely epic mutant kids of all types. The art is classic but has a style and spirit of its own. If only the writing had learned the same lesson. Instead of simply trying to revisit the past, the story needs to add something to the keep our interest beyond a standard adventure. Hopefully this issue was simply designed to lull us into boredom and complacency before a big twist comes as the arc continues. As this stands, it is simply a forgettable placeholder.
