Review: The Adventure of Byron #1

The Adventures of Byron evolve around three creatures living in the Casa De Monstro. Byron is a blue, one eyed two horned monster, Oswald is a four eyed Rabbit, and Paxton is some type of three eyed creature in an octopus suit. This issues revolves around the three trying to write a comic book.

Although the comic is framed as an adventure comic, any pretense of adventure or crime-fighting was purely incidental. In the comic“s premiere issue the trio try to be comic book writers, but the premise unravels as a result of the fact they have different taste, and also of them being terrible at writing stories that make any sense.

Readers weren“t given definitive answers regarding the trio“s origins, and even my descriptions of them are inconclusive and suspect. Ultimately it doesn’t matter. On my first flip through, I thought, “this is stupid.” On your second reading”this is stupid.” And your third reading, I felt like this just the right level of stupid. It is a surreal and indulgent show that doesn“t hold back just how nonsensical it is often coming close to breaking the 4th wall. It doesn“t make a lot of sense, but that“s kinda the point. It“s medium-brow comedy that only find funny lacking only if you’re an arse about it.

The artistic team consisting of illustrator, Chris Hamer and Colorist, Noel Saabye left me with no doubt that this could be adapted.Â In between the similarities to other shows, I often see on the Adult Swim,Â Network. I can’t see why not. Squidbillies and Aqua Teen Force often comes to mind.

Scout Comics has been on quite a role lately. As their projects like Wrecthes, Solar Flare, and The Mall keep getting adapted, it would be crazy as a speculator to ignore a gem like The Adventure of Byron #1.
