REVIEW: The Cull Issue Three (of Five)

The Cull issue three is as stunning visually as the first two issues. Mattia De Iulis has out done himself again. Altogether the Cull has been a lot of fun. The Cull is a five issue series written and Co-Created by Kelly Thompson. You will know Kelly for her extensive work with Marvel Comics writing the Eisner Nominated Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Jessica Jones, West Coast Avengers and much more.

The art by Mattia De Iulis is second to none. Mattia is also the Co-Creator of the Cull and his style of art for this particular title has been crucial in the story telling by Kelly. The colors used, the facial expressions between friends, and the world building have been enhanced by the art in The Cull. Mattia has also worked on several other titles like Jessica Jones, Immortal hulk, Captain America, Star Wars and more.

Issue three begins in the Meadow, a world these five friends have walked into. The visual is stunning, full of color and life. Katie, Wade and Cleo are searching for Wade and Lux when a unique being appears to them. It is at this point we have the opportunity to see this new world and what it has to offer. It begins pleasant as the communication between the five and this being develops. That development turns into an experience this group will never forget, for more then one reason.

The writing by Kelly in The Cull is perfect between this group of friends. The back and forth, the banter, and the genuine care can be seen throughout these issues. That coupled with Mattia’s art makes the comic feel like it is a live action experience. The facial expressions, the colors that appear at the right time throughout the issue pointing to important experiences that need to be noticed by the reader, and the action all come together making a must read series.

The Cull is a definite recommend comic title from me.
