This new series from Scout Comics looks at a life not lived coupled with the idea of what said life could have been.  It’s an interesting see-saw of a story that borrows influences from a few easily recognisable sources.  But do theses disparate parts make a more enjoyable whole?

Bo, a resident of Oakcago in his early 30’s has lived a life of quiet dreams.  Sure, when he was younger all he wanted to do was draw comic books.  But somewhere along the way, college, booze, parties and girls all meandered their way into his life not propelling more like leading to his eventual downfall into humdrum life.  An accident will change Bo’s life forever!

The book is the creation of writer, artist, letterer Bryan “Peabe” Odiamar who does everything var staple the book together!  Looking at the writing, the book has a kind of Wanted meets Life on Mars feeling.  Key points that insinuate my view are the idea of a life that has lost its focus and of course the accident that brings out the Life on Mars scenario.  Whilst perhaps not the most original, Odiamar manages to generate genuine feelings for Bo.  Things get a little  more chaotic from the middle of the book onwards, which is pretty much where the third major influence raises its head.

Odiamar’s art gives off major Scott Pilgrim vibes pretty much from the get go.  If you are not a fan of Scott Pilgrim then you may not enjoy the off the wall art.  Think lines are uses to give live life to Bo’s cartoon creations, even if the impacts and realisations remain hinted, though seems quite obvious when you consider the influences.  Odiamar’s letters are also a chunky affiar that suits the overall feel of the book.

I really wanted to love this book, though the truth of the matter is that, i prefer the influences rather than read a book that leans so heavily on them.  Hopefully, things will improve down the line.

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow

Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
