REVIEW: TRANSFORMERS #14

In the growing Energon Universe few characters show the constant search for power and its serious results as clearly as Starscream. With Transformers #14, Daniel Warren Johnson, Jason Howard, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton give us a key part that changes Starscream’s story. This issue looks into the Decepticon’s split mind tricky alliances, and never-ending want for control leading to an even darker future.

The heart of Transformers #14 is Starscream’s endless push for power. Once a strong fighter and smart planner, his goal has often caused his failure. Soundwave betrayed him and left him broken in body and mind. Starscream’s path in this issue gives a scary picture of obsession getting out of hand.

This issue digs deep into his inner conflicts through glimpses of key events on Cybertron, which show how his morals fell apart. Starscream’s pride makes him blind even as his partnerships fall apart due to lies.

A main theme in this issue is Starscream’s shaky team-up with Horton’s gang. Their partnership based on mutual trickery, proves Starscream’s cleverness. But it also reveals his weak spots. Horton’s gang tries to use Starscream for their own goals, but the Decepticon thrives here playing his so-called friends. This back-and-forth of lies and tricks builds suspense, as both sides rush to reach their aims, not knowing the danger that Starscream’s comeback could bring.

Jason Howard’s artwork reveals the essence of Starscream’s transformation to the full extent. The epic of the series, a striking double page splash reveals Starscream in his new form for the very first time. This is the moment which secures his metamorphosis into a much more dangerous being, as it artistically underscores the story to its core themes of regrowth and unbridled ambition. Howard maintains this momentum through the inclusion of such comic beats as a short appearance of a cat, contrasting with the gravity of the situation, as such the narrative becomes always exciting and captivating. The flashback interludes executed with careful great care of detail, throw readers into the recollections of Cybertron history while at the same time, showcase the main turning points in Starscream’s development.

In terms of story and art, Transformers #14 is clearly among the best in the series as well as the whole Energon Universe. The journey Starscream goes is equally heartbreaking and bone-chilling at the same time, leaving the fans wanting for more. The writer-artist duo’s strength lies in being able to thoughtfully anticipate heartbreaking turning points while also indulging the readers with fantastic illustrations.

Transformers #14 is a must read for the old and the new fans of the series, presenting a thoughtful and layered rendition of one of the most captivating antagonists of the franchise. Starscream’s ‘revenge ‘needs no introduction—his comeback only emboldens his zeal and serves as a warning for his enemies.
