REVIEW: Ultimate Spider-Man #14
Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto has been a storytelling masterclass, and issue #14 keeps up the tradition of exciting turns and furious action. This problem is hardly an exception given the series’ reputation for keeping readers on their toes. The stakes have never been higher, with Peter Parker and Harry Osborn fighting for their lives in the Savage Land with Kraven the Hunter in command.
Kraven’s deadly game reaches its peak as Peter Parker and Harry Osborn fight for survival. But in this brutal showdown, the true predator might not be who we expect. As alliances shift and betrayals surface, Ultimate Spider-Man #14 delivers a turning point that will shake the foundation of this new Ultimate Universe. One of the biggest strengths of Ultimate Spider-Man is its ability to subvert expectations. Hickman understands that while longtime fans may recognize familiar characters, this iteration of the Ultimate Universe operates under different rules.
The introduction of Richard Parker and Felicia Hardy early in the issue signals a deviation from the classic Marvel timeline. Instead of Black Cat being a peer of Peter Parker, she is now closer in age to Richard, Peter’s son. This change adds an interesting dynamic, making their developing connection one of the more compelling relationships in this new Spider-Man saga. Felicia’s presence also raises questions about the Sinister Six’s larger plans. Her potential role—whether as an ally, enemy, or something in between—adds a layer of unpredictability to the story. Has she genuinely bonded with Richard, or is she part of an elaborate trap orchestrated by her father? These uncertainties heighten the tension, making every character interaction feel meaningful.
The heart of Ultimate Spider-Man #14 lies in the Savage Land showdown between Kraven and our heroes. Checchetto’s artwork brings this sequence to life, immersing us in the primal brutality of the battle. Kraven’s sheer enjoyment of the hunt is palpable. He isn’t just fighting Peter and Harry—he is toying with them, savoring every moment. Hickman wisely plays into Kraven’s arrogance, which ultimately serves as both his strength and his weakness. His overconfidence allows Peter and Harry to find openings, forcing Kraven into close combat. This results in a visceral, high-stakes battle where Peter’s agility and Spider-Sense are pushed to their limits. Despite Peter’s resilience, the fight takes a devastating turn. Hickman crafts a sequence that forces Peter into a moment of desperation—one where he must rely not just on his abilities but on his intelligence and instincts.
The final moments of the battle serve as a gut punch. Kraven, always adapting, realizes that Peter’s Spider-Sense reacts to direct threats. In a chilling twist, he redirects his lethal intent away from Peter and toward Harry. The result? A brutal, unexpected death that leaves Peter shattered. Harry’s demise is a seismic moment for Ultimate Spider-Man. His friendship with Peter was a central pillar of the story, and his death leaves a massive void. Hickman builds the tragedy masterfully—just when it seems like Peter and Harry have turned the tide, Kraven flips the script. This loss will have far-reaching consequences. Not only will Peter have to deal with the emotional fallout, but it also shifts the balance of power within the Sinister Six. With Kraven proving his ruthlessness, will the rest of the group follow his lead, or will fractures begin to form within their ranks?
Ultimate Spider-Man #14 is a must-read. Hickman and Checchetto continue to redefine what this version of Spider-Man can be, delivering a story that balances emotional depth with high-octane action. The shocking ending ensures that the next issue will be one of the most highly anticipated in the series.
