ADVANCE REVIEW: Bruce Lee: Walk of the Dragon #1: The Dragon Lives On

Let me start by saying that I am a huge martial arts fan. Â I have studied several forms and styles and even competed quite successfully in tournaments. That being said one of the biggest influences in that part of my life was the legendary Bruce Lee. I was obsessed with his films and could recite all the dialog along with the characters. Â My friends and I would act out the fight scenes. I could only wish to live in a world that still had Bruce Lee in it. Â Well, thanks to his daughter, Shannon Lee, and Jeff Kline, the President of Darby Pop Publishing I may not get to live in that world, but I can sure enjoy reading about it.

Bruce Lee: Walk of the Dragon #1Â is a one shot comic that shows us a world where Bruce Lee never died. He is alive and well and in his prime, though there are some memory issues, the recovery of which I“m sure could lead to some great storylines. The comic was created by Shannon Lee and Jeff Kline and is a beautiful tribute to the legacy of Bruce Lee and brings a true legend to a new generation of fans.

Nicole Dubuc was brought on board to write the issue and delivers a fun, action packed, thrill ride. Â She manages to not only capture the essence of Bruce Lee, but also gives us some great supporting characters whose adventures I would like to see more of. There is a perfect balance of backstory and action. You never feel mired in explanations and the story has a quick pace that leaves you wanting more. I really could not believe I ran out of pages so quickly. Not only does Dubuc deliver on action, but also on humor. There is a scene where Bruce gets mistaken for a Bruce Lee impersonator that had me literally laughing out loud.

Dubuc“s story is complemented by the art of Brandon McKinney who handled both pencils and inks on the book. McKinney has some truly impressive work here, especially in his action scenes. The action flows so smoothly from panel to panel it“s like watching a film version play out in your head.

The feel of the world is bright and vibrant thanks to the color palette of Zac Atkinson. Atkinson creates a world that looks and feels crisp and hopeful. It sets a perfect mood and setting for the story and the characters comprising Team Bruce.
