Advance Review: Demon Days Cursed Web #1
Demon Days Cursed Web is a spin on the X-Men Fairy Tales book with amazing art by Peach Momoko. The basics of the story are interesting with Mariko Yashida having to find her lost past as a child of a horned Oni. Her maid Kuroki was working for the evil Ogin but is kidnapped after refusing her bidding.
Mariko sets off to Kirisaki Mountain to learn about her past. On her path she is attacked by Toraji and the shapeshifting Yokai named Ocho. She is freed by a wolf and her own mystical abilities. Each of the characters has an X-Men counterpart but the story is very much a fairy tale.
As always the fun for fans is seeing classic characters in new setting but the dialogue is clunky, potentially a casualty of the translation by Zack Davisson or just poor writing overall. The action and art are amazing but too often the story feels weighed down by the exposition. The art is masterful but the story feels like it’s written by a child.
The story ends with the White Queen-esque Ogin sending Thor and Storm counterpoints to do her bidding. This promises even more great visual fun with the next issue, but it is unfortunate that the great visuals seem destined to be paired with poor dialogue once more.
