Advance Review: Jazz Legend #2

Writer JC Lacek takes us on a crazy journey into the mind of madness in the new comic Jazz Legend. (Scout Comics) There is a distinct pulp noir setting that is interrupted by the ingestion of a new psychotropic street drug that takes its users on a crazy journey inside themselves and bends reality with fantasy.
As the new blue street drug continues to tighten its grip on jazz musician Martin Comity, the effects of its psychedelic high have started to cause him to lose touch with reality. He introduces writer Benjamin Way to the intense visions during a meeting at a coffee shop and the two men go off on mind bending journeys within themselves. After Benjamin survives the initial impact of the chemicals, he attempts to approach Martin to discuss the journey, only to learn he is on a much different trip.

If Miles Davis“s Bitches Brew were written as a soundtrack to the classic Junky by William S. Burroughs, Jazz Legend would be the result. At times, the pages make me imagine how different the world could have been if the classic Fantasia were made into a horror movie instead of what it ended up being. The surreal journey each of the main characters go on lends itself to madness and beauty at the same time. The comic does quite well at weaving the narrative between the gritty streets of Motocity and the lush colorful worlds within the mind of people who drink the blue drug at the center of this story.

The impressive art of Vasco Duarte is key to making the voyage a seamless one. The transitions from the city to the worlds within our mind are beautify drawn and the masterful use of color within this world helps to convey the journey the users are on.

I“ve got a high level of interest in following the rest of this series to see where the comic takes us. Personally, I“m a fan of noir stories, beat writers, and general insanity, so this comic checked a lot of boxes for me. With a nod to classic jazz and bizarrely hallucinated worlds, I“m happy to ride along to complete this journey.
