Review: Sci-Fu

I didn“t know just how much I needed a Science Fiction/Kung-Fu/Hip-Hop comic till I read Sci-Fu. Bringing together these awesome genres and dropping them into 1980“s Brooklyn was a great place to start the story of Wax, a kid who wants to impress the girl of his dreams, Pirate Polly. He does what any self-respecting kid in the 80“s did, he writes a song and puts it on a mix tape. The song is so bad, however, that it could potentially bring down the entire planet and subject us to the rule of a ruthless robot overlord named Choo Choo.

Writer and artist Yehudi Mercado found a visionary balance of great storytelling and artistic talent in this new graphic novel published by Oni Press. Wax, and his crew, which is made up of his Uncle Rashaad, his sister “The D”“ and his best friend Cooky, find themselves pulled into another dimension because of his mad turntable skills. Once there, and shortly after dispatching of an evil robot, he meets Kabuki Snowman, who has arrived to teach him the ancient art of Sci-Fu. He“ll need this to take care of Choo Choo and his crew of Five Deadly Dangers.

This story had me literally laughing out loud. The story is innocent enough for kids, but kept an old man like myself engaged as well. I really liked the vision of the world of Disctopia. It was as if a neon universe appeared, filled with robots who discovered their sweet tooth when introduced to ice cream. Young fans of cartoons such as Ben 10, and adults who are fans the anything from the Scott Pilgrim series or The Karate Kid will find this comic fun.

Sci-Fu wraps itself up in an inter-dimensional blanket of Kung-Fu, Hip Hop fun. Give credit to the creator Yehudi Mercado for not only writing a fun and compelling story, but animating the entire world himself. Mercado proves to be a rising star in comics with this book and we should all take notice of his talent. I would highly recommend picking up this graphic novel, popping in an old Run DMC cassette tape, and having some fun.
